Sharon Hood has found that lace of exposure to fire, along with over stocking, greatly limits conifer defenses against beetles. The drought may be the proximate cause but the ultimate cause is fire suppression.

thanks for the lead Bob. Many have suspected that fire suppression has contributed to this, but it has been hard to prove in the past.

Is there any assistance programs to help property owners that have a multitude of dead trees due to the bark beetles? The dead trees are a very real fire danger.

Hi Susan, Yes, there is helping coming in some areas as the Governor's emergency proclamation is being implemented. Tuolumne county is the first to have put in a plan in place to remove trees. http://www.uniondemocrat.com/localnews/4110619-151/officials-share-details-on-tree-removal-plans

A product that has been around for at least a few years but has just over the last year or so been labeled efficacious against the Western pine bark beetle by the EPA called Tree-Age (pronounced triage as in used in medical evaluations) is a tree injection product that cant be washed of like Carbaryl lasts 2 years. It's expensive but work. Proponents hint at and are hopeful it will also work against other bark boring bugs like the red turpentine. I hope this helps.

It's good to know that tree mortality can be caused by insects. My brother has been telling me about a forest near his home that has been having some issues with dying trees recently. I'll share this information with him so that he can look into helping them with their beetle problem.
