Leigh, do these materials and strategies apply to freshwater as well as marine?

The nontoxic hull coatings can be used on any boat. They act primarily as a barrier to water penetration, although nothing is perfect. If water penetrates the external, hull coating and the underlying gel-coating (applied in the mold when the boat is made), blisters will form. When a hull coating has too many blisters, the boat must be hauled, the layers of coatings must be stripped, the blisters ground, patched and then the coatings must be reapplied. I'll upload a photo of a blister repair job in progress.
