Thank you. I have been following this and would have liked to have reported the same, but I am not a credible source- as you are!

The moniker “murder hornet” was bestowed on these hornets because of the way they decimate honey bee hives, decapitating the bees. Not because anyone thought they murdered people.

In the more-mirthful area of creative animal names, are you aware that people have taken to calling Canadian Geese "Cobra chickens"?

Is it not true that they're called "murder hornets" because they kill entire hives of bees by ripping their heads off?

These hornets have been in Virginia for 20+ years. I've been catching them in traps for the past 5 years. I've caught several this spring.

I was stung 3 times in the ankle in Port Orchard, Wash., in March! It hurts much worse than your article portrays. I was sick in bed for a week afterwards.

They can be deadly to babies and small children and pets. Horrible insects. Regular size very hard to kill; I had to once. Can't imagine how to kill a giant size.

That's what we know how to do: kill because we don't undwrstand them. Kill everything and we will figure it out later. It's so sad. I can't even begin to express myself

Three years ago in Bradford County, Penn., wasps were around. They built a nest in my friends' eaves and started destroying his neighbors' honey bees. We tried to find out who to contact but were unable to. There's no doubt it was these wasps

These things have been in Missouri for over 20 years. The first time me and my husband encountered them was at an old farmhouse we rented. The back bedroom was full of them. I was actually stung by one on my left toe. It was so bad i could not walk on that foot for over a week. We have killed at least 6 of them this spring .

Thank you for some much needed perspective. On the Monarch raising groups, I have already read (repeatedly) that the "Murder Hornets are coming for their babies!"
Translation: Vespa mandarinia and Monarch larvae.

Toni: I hope that you report that nest to authorities. I would be very concerned for humans and dogs!

To be fair, the bullet ant got its name by being rated the most painful bite or sting of any arthropod.

About 4 or 5 years ago I heard a loud buzz in my yard by a tree upon further investigation I found what looked exactly like this hornet was attacking a cicada it had brought down and was ripping it apart piece by piece and flying away with them. Could this be the same thing as this hornet?

While I’ve seen documentaries featuring the giant hornet, at no time were they ever called the “murder” hornet. Those same documentaries did make it seem like they were more dangerous to humans than any other wasp on the planet. So thank you for the clarification on the true danger these insects may impose, and the factual size of the “invasion."

The real danger is to our bee population in the USA.
wiki: Advice in China is that people stung more than 10 times need medical help, and need emergency treatment for more than 30 stings. The stings can cause kidney failure.[22] In 2013, stings by Asian giant hornets killed 41 people and injured more than 1,600 people in Shaanxi, China.[23]

I have seen the killer hornets. They will stop at nothing to try to get inside. They put a hole in my screen and now they are trying to put a hole in the glass. They keep hitting it until it kills them. I live in Pickens, South Carolina.This happened about 5 yrs ago. I have moved since then. But these are some mean-looking nasty hornets.

I have a question.
Is there any antidote to counteract the venom if this Vespa mandarinia sting you?

@Charles Tobbins and Toni Bogetto

What y'all saw were cicada killers

@Charles - 110% it was cicada killer

@Toni - 99.999% chance it was cicada killer

While not very aggressive toward humans or even especially protective of its underground nest .... they are extremely intimidating looking and are very scary when flying in or near your personal space but they rarely attack humans and are solitary creatures and apparently put on this earth to kill cicadas because they are obsessed with doing that, rest assured.

As a child growing up in Arlington, Texas, I'd see a dozen nests appear every spring/summer in my backyard and I'd get my tennis racket and whack the crap outta those cicada killers but it wasn't until 10 years later that I even knew what they were, although I was aware they were killing cicadas all day long and we had lots of those (cicadas), we had lots of trees and a creek behind the house.

They need to bait these nasty things with live bee hives and catch as many as they can and then clip their wings to impair their RNA’s I’ve flight so they can lead them to their neat. Just sayin!

I have this hornets in my backyard for the past 20 + years they like to eat cicadas. We hired professionals to spray all four backyards and nothing happened, we tried to destroy all the nests (over 100 per lot). Now they came back again, they never leave.

Found one of these huge hornets buzzing around my office. Grabbed the antibacterial spray and spray the thing until it slowed down and I could make sure that everyone was safe and I sprayed it with Zevo. By the time it was on the floor, it was decapitated. I’m not taking any chances with the ones whom I love. Very large, very loud, and very hard to kill. Last year it was two Giant Asian grasshoppers in the kitchen and garage. The year 2023--this Murder Hornet! I’m definitely sure that this hornet doesn’t help our ecosystem. It has teeth and a long fat stinger. Be careful!(hahaha)
