Happy New Year!

I am amazed and gratified by what the Master Gardener Program organization accomplished in 2015. 

There are more than 250 active Master Gardeners, nine Hands-on gardening education projects for trainees with excellent volunteer leadership.  Seven approved sites!  The “best” MGP Executive Committee members, Speakers Bureau Speakers and Schedulers, and Clerical Support Group. We also have an impressive and informed group of Approved Garden Site Leads and Hands-on Leads.  A small but mighty group of volunteers supporting the work and efforts of the UCCE Farm Advisors research projects. MGs do such great work and contribute so much to the mission and goals of the MGP. 

In 2015, we made several changes to the MGP of Ventura County Bylaws, every Executive Committee now has two co-chairs to share the workload and responsibilities. Changes to the bylaws also included bringing the Helpline Area to the status of a Standing Committee. There are more than 15 Helpline Desk Trainers, the largest number of helpline trainers every. Our Helpline Schedulers have been in their positions for more than five years. Hope all volunteers are aware that the MGP was created to provide University's Cooperative Extension Farm Advisors with a group of educated volunteers to answer garden related questions with science-based gardening information. The Helpline is the cornerstone of the MGP in California, the United States and internationally. There are trained Master Gardener volunteers answering gardening related questions every day of the week. We are part of a very larger organization.

In July 2015, we started the new fiscal year with a Leadership Conference for Executive Committee Co-chairs and other members in leadership positions. The first MGP Operational Guidelines Handbook was reviewed and implement as part of the program. This handbook is designed to be a road map for existing and newly elected Executive Committee Co-chairs. The workshop also included sessions on leadership qualities and effective conflict resolution techniques. Special thanks to Nicole Vanole and Kei Zehr for their outstanding contribution and support in helping to create the first MGP Operational Guidelines Handbook for Ventura County.  

In 2005, the first class of the Master Gardener Program of Ventura County graduated. This year we celebrated our 10th Anniversary and recognized Master Gardeners who have remained active in the program. We also celebrated the accomplishments of the Master Gardeners reaching 2500 hours of community volunteer service. This distinguish group of Master Gardeners included Julian Hoyle, Tony Hepton, Judy Ascheman, Barbara Hill, and Diane Carter.  

The HOPE Shed (aka Potting Shed) has become an area where Certified Master Gardeners can participate in hands on plant education and gain continuing education hours at the same time. So far, more than 200 continuing education hours have been posted by Certified Master Gardeners participating in these informative educational opportunities. Instructors for these classes include MGP Advisor Dr. James Downer along with many talented Certified Master Gardeners. We are working to create an outdoor classroom environment in the HOPE Shed. Special thanks to the creativity of UCCE and HAREC Director Christopher Smith, we now have beautiful worktables for these outdoor educational sessions.

Since January of 2015, we reached more than 20,000 individuals with science-based gardening information.  More than 600 questions were answered at the helpline desk.  MG participated in numerous outreach and community events and won many ribbons and awards for the Ventura County Fair display.  Hosted six Seasonal Mastering Your Home Garden Workshops.  MGP volunteers also led an effort to educate more 4500 residents in Ventura County about statewide declared DROUGHT.  MGP speakers presented 64 presentations on the topics related to saving water in the home landscape. Calleguas Municipal Water District provided advertising funding to promote the MGP water saving talks in local newspapers. Most talks were attended by more than 100 home gardeners.

In addition, the MGP of Ventura County was selected to host the first Statewide MGP workshop featuring the New “California” Landscape. This workshop provided Master Gardener volunteers with information and suggestions for approaching the drought in Ventura County. More than 100 volunteers from three counties were in attendance. This one day workshop was held in Thousand Oaks and UC educators from Ventura County and the state presented valuable information about saving water in the home landscape.

MGP volunteers facilitated two off-site plant sales and education workshops that yield more than 200 names for our contact list. MG woodworkers built more than 50 raised beds and nearly all been purchased. Propagated 5000 plus plants for Speaker Bureau engagements and school garden giveaways.  Supported HAREC youth school field trips, school visits, and Pumpkin-Pumpkin outreach effort.  Improved and maintained gardens and compost area used to educate the public at the Hansen Agricultural Research and Extension Center.  

Assisted UC Farm Advisors with research projects and tracked more than 400 hours of volunteer service.  

We interviewed and accepted thirty-six trainees to the Class of 2016.  This group of trainees are described best as engaged and excited about everything. They are eager to support the work and efforts of the MGP.

Tuesday, March 8, 2016 - Quarterly Master Gardener Program Gathering

Hope to see you and yours at the 1st Master Gardener Program Gathering of the year.  The gathering will be held on Tuesday March 8, 2016 at the Camarillo Ranch House from 5:30 to 7:30 PM.  You are welcome to bring your spouse or gardening friend to the gathering. This is a potluck event. Please bring enough food for serve six to eight people. If your picture is not on the VMS, we will be taking a picture of you to post for your gardening friends to see. Remember your information is always protected and not use for solicitation.

Our speaker will be University of California Cooperative Extension Environmental Horticulturist Janet Hartin, she serves San Bernardino, Riverside, and Los Angeles Counties.  She specializes in sustainable landscape practices and principles including water efficient landscapes; use of compost; and, integrated pest management stressing prevention.  She has presented over 1,200 talks to professional societies and organizations both nationally and internationally and authored numerous publications. In August 2014, Janet received a University of California Distinguished Service Award for her exceptional service as Associate Editor for UC ANR for all environmental horticulture publications.  You are in for a treat!

Home & Garden Show at the Ventura County Fair - March 18, 19 and 20th

We will need volunteers to help with set-up, teardown, and to work shifts in the booth. If you are interested in volunteering for the Home & Garden Show. Be sure to check emails, an announcement will be sent in February to recruit volunteers. This is a wonderful opportunity for MG Trainees to track volunteer hours in the community.

Happy Valentines Day! 

Thank you for sharing your time and talent.

Monday February 18, 2013 is Presidents Day and both UCCE offices and Hansen Agricultural Center will be closed for the holiday.  We will reopen on Tuesday February 19.  I will be unavailable by phone and email as well.  

The Potting Shed at the Hansen Agricultural Center will be closed from Friday February 22 to Monday March 4, 2013.  The shed will reopen on Tuesday March 5, 2013.  If you have any questions, please let me know.

Tool Shed Lead for the Hansen Agricultural Center.  Dick Paul, a graduate from the class of 2012, is the Tool Shed Lead for Hansen.  Since November, Dick has spent countless hours illustrating schematics of the irrigation system for gardens at the Hansen Agricultural Center.  Dick has organized the tool shed in preparation for the hands-on programs.  Thank you Dick for your work!  I encourage all volunteers to visit the tool shed next time you are at Hansen.   

MG Plant Giveaways Project is now supported by two capable volunteers.  In 2012, Lead Tom Dase propagated more than 1500 plantings for outreach events and speaking engagements.  Master Gardener Dash Gill is joining this effort and I would like to thank him for taking on this exciting project.  We hope to distribute more than 2000 plantings in 2013.  Tom and Dash make a perfect team!!!     

New grandparent: Communication Chair Carol Kurtz is a first time grandmother.  She just returned from North Carolina where she met her new granddaughter.  We wish you the very best and glad you are home.  Congratulations!  

Master Gardener Quarterly Gathering scheduled on Tuesday March 12th: 

Come join your gardening friends for an evening of delicious food and engaging information. 

The Master Gardener Quarterly Gathering/Meeting is scheduled on Tuesday March 12, 2013 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Camarillo Ranch House.  Dr. Gordon W. Frankie, from UC Berkeley, Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management will be our guest speaker talking about bees and bee management.  This is potluck event!  Remember to bring enough food for six to eight people.  You can bring one friend or your spouse.

Dr. Frankie has requested a grant from the Hansen Endowment to fund his research work on bees.  We need twenty-two Master Gardeners interested in studying California Native Bees in Santa Paula to help in this project.  If you would like to participate, send me an email at ljhaynes@ucdavis.edu.  Master Gardeners Tracey Nisky and Amy Roemelen will act as leads for this project.  Dr. Gordon Frankie will schedule two Saturday workdays in 2013.  Training is provided.

We invite you to attend special Edible Landscaping Workshops in March and April at convenient locations throughout Ventura County -- in Simi Valley, Ventura, Oxnard, Camarillo, Santa Paula, and Thousand Oaks.  Times and places are shown in the “What’s on the Calendar” below.  These Edible Landscaping Workshops are offered at NO COST.  

Why should you want edibles in your landscape?  Edible landscaping is good for the environment, provides your family with healthy and delicious food choices, and if done properly, will reduce your water use, support wildlife and reduce chemical use.  Learn how to design, install, and maintain your own edible landscape!

Sample topics:  Why edibles?  How to creatively design your own edible landscape?  Plant choice, soils, fertilizer, composting, site selection, safe harvest and storage, local ordinances or HOA rules that may affect what you are allowed to do, and more!

Hope you are ready for an exciting year of gardening education and volunteer service!!!

There are many events and volunteer opportunities planned. The MG speaker bureau is also gearing up with a great series of garden talks for the Simi Center in Simi Valley, theGoebel Center inThousand Oaks, the ARC Center in Ojai and the Camarillo Library in Camarillo. Dates and times for the speaking engagements will be posted in the Master Gardener Program update. Be sure to reserve your space by registering.

Need Help!
We need two volunteers to help with scheduled garden talks for the Camarillo Library and theGoebelCenter. If you decide to volunteer for this position, you will be asked to distribute MG materials prior and following the speakers presentation; retrieve and return laptop and computer to the UCCE office; gather names and emails from individuals interested in receiving information about upcoming VC Master Gardener events and activities; and pick-up plant giveaways from the Hansen Agricultural Center.

- March 2013, Camarillo Library talks are held every Wednesday from 6:30-8:00pm
- July to October 2013,Goebel Center talks are held on the 4th Saturday from 9:30-11:30am

On Thursday January 10, the first training class was held and the Executive Committee Co-Chair Joanne Abing welcomed the Class of 2013 Trainees. Education Committee Chairs Cathy Allen,Kathryn Estomo Carole Roland, and Barbara Wilsey were on-hand to greet and meet trainees.Carol Seaman, Rodney Fernandez, Juan Hernandez, andJulian Hoyle, members of the Education Committee supported the class and shared pertinent information. Jim Downer was also available to greet and welcome the new class. The day was filled with excitement and anticipation.

We need your help!

Do you like lemons? If so, Dr. Ben Faber needs your help with a lemon research project. We need three or four volunteers interested in making lemonade and counting seeds. You will be asked to volunteer in the UCCE Lab located in Ventura. UC Staff Researcher Anna Howell will lead this effort on Tuesday February 12, Wednesday February 13, and Thursday February 14. Master Gardener Quarterly Gathering scheduled on Tuesday March 12th: Come join your gardening friends for an evening of delicious food and engaging information.

The Master Gardener Quarterly Gathering/Meeting is scheduled on Tuesday March 12, 2013 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Camarillo Ranch House. Dr. Gordon W. Frankie, from UC Berkeley, Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management will be our guest speaker talking about bees and bee management.

Dr. Frankie has requested a grant from the Hansen Endowment to fund his research work on bees. We need twenty-two Master Gardeners interested in studying California Native Bees in Santa Paulato help in this project. Master Gardeners Tracey Nisky and Amy Roemelen will act as leads for this project. Dr. Gordon Frankie will schedule two Saturday workdays in 2013. Training is provided. Clerical Support Needed: Are you interested in supporting clerical type tasks? If so, we will offer a clerical orientation on Wednesday February 20 from 9am to 10am. GENERAL PROGRAM INFORMATION:
 VC Certified Master§ Gardeners are allocated eighteen months to complete 37 volunteer hours and 18 hours of continuing education. Why 37 and 18? Certified Master Gardeners are required to complete 25 hours of volunteer service and 12 hours of continuing education in twelve months. Due to the additional six months, we have calculated required hours based on an eighteen month period, not twelve. When you recertify in June 2013; we will count your volunteer and continuing education hours posted from January 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013. Your posted hours will need to total 37 volunteer hours and 18 continuing education hours.

Typically recertification information is sent in January. In April 2013, you will receive your recertification information to accommodate the new fiscal year calendar. In subsequent years, the recertification period will be from July 1st to June 30.

Class of 2012 Graduates:
 From January 1,§ 2013 to June 30, 2013, your posted hours will need to total 12.5 volunteer hours and 6.0 hours of continuing education hours.
 From July 1, 2013 to§ June 30, 2014, your posted hours will need to total 25 volunteer hours and 12 continuing education hours.  In subsequent years, your certification§ period will be from July 1 to June 30.

On Thursday January 10, the first training class was held and the Executive Committee Co-Chair Joanne Abing welcomed the Class of 2013 Trainees.  Education Committee Chairs Cathy Allen,Kathryn Estomo, Carole Roland, and Barbara Wilseywere on-hand to greet and meet trainees.  Carol Seaman, Rodney Fernandez, Juan Hernandez, and Julian Hoyle, members of the Education Committee, supported the class and shared pertinent information.  Jim Downer was also available to greet and welcome the new class.  The day was filled with excitement and anticipation.

Volunteer Opportunities:

 

The Ventura County Master Gardener Asian Citrus Psyllid (ACP) Committee has formulated a plan to place brochures at key locations in Ventura County.  Since 2010, a small but mighty group of Master Gardeners have distributed more than 6,500 information flyers about the threat of ACP.  Linda Haque, MG ACP Committee Lead has actively participated in statewide and local meetings focused on the threat of ACP.  She is recognized for her outstanding work to address this serious problem facing the citrus industry in California.  The team includes Master Gardeners Arlene Pinkerton, Joan Stuart, Charlotte Kalenack, and Kim Herren.  Master Gardeners are needed to deliver brochures and holders to assigned sites and replenish brochures from January 28 to July 15, 2013. 

In January 2013, Master Gardeners assisting with this effort will receive a list of locations in their local community, “Save Citrus” brochures, and brochure holders by mail.  The ACP Committee members will make contact with locations prior to your delivery date.  If you are willing to support this project, contact Linda Haquedirectly at lhaque@earthlink.net to let her know you plan to join this important effort.

Mastering Your Home Garden Workshop is scheduled on Saturday January 26, 2013 from 8:15 am to noon.  Sessions offered are Pruning Dormant Fruit Trees & Selection and Care of Garden Tools.  If you decide to register online, you will be asked to pay $30.00 with your debit or credit card.  We no longer accepted cash or checks from the general public for these workshops.  Master Gardeners are asked to pay $10.00 to attend workshops.  You can download the workshop registration form from the website.  Send completed form along with your check for $10.00 made payable to “UC Regents”.  If possible, please register and pay prior to the workshop.

Happy New Year!!!

Hello Master Gardeners,

As I think back on this past year, I am amazed and gratified by what the Master Gardener organization has accomplished. Speakers Bureau efforts continue to expand reaching home gardeners throughout Ventura County. The MG Hands-on program continues to thrive, and new gardens were designed and installed. Last year, we identified 11 emerging leaders as well as 10 leaders ready and willing to take on the role of hands-on garden leads for the Class of 2013 program year.

More than 20,000 volunteer service hours were posted by 181 Certified Master Gardeners. The Class of 2012 posted 3,519 hours, an average of 109.9 hours per trainee. Thirty-two graduates graduated on Thursday December 13, 2012 and more than 99 people were in attendance. There was record breaking interest in the VCMG Program and more than sixty-five individuals applied for a space in the 2013 MG Training Class. Thankfully, we were able to accept 36 trainees.

As I reflect on my role in the MG program - I feel fortunate - I count each and every one of you among the richest blessings in my life. Your gifts to me go far beyond professional rewards; they fill me with optimism for the future. Thank you for sharing your time and talents with the University of California Ventura County Master Gardener Program. It is an honor to work with such dedicated and devoted group of volunteers. I look forward to working with you in 2013.

New Additional to the Fuller Family: Master Gardener Sandy Fuller is a first time grandmother. Greyson Michael was born on December 1, 2012. The family is excited and pleased with the birth of Greyson. He weighted 8 pounds, 1ounce and is 20 ¾ inches long. Mom and Dad are doing well and adjusting to Greyson schedule. Sandy is enjoying her “new” role as grandma.

KUDOS to Volunteers Supporting Blackberry Research Project: Oleg, Cameron, and Anna would like to express their gratitude for all of your hard work and dedication to the blackberry project. They would like to thank you for enduring the heat and wicked thorns. The first group of blackberries was mowed down in December, the second will be mowed down in January, and the third in March. But, these plants will regrow quickly and be ready for another round of harvesting next summer (2013). Hopefully, many Master Gardeners will be able to support this project and Oleg looks forward to seeing your cheerful smiling faces next summer.

Volunteer Opportunities:

Rose Research Project: Jim Downer has requested the help of Master Gardeners and Hansen Volunteers to help remove the suckers from the roses as the suckers are taking over the roses and need to be removed as soon as possible. What a great way to begin to accumulate volunteer hours for 2013!

We plan to meet at the Rose Project site on Wednesday January 16, 2013 at 8:30 am. For those who are joining us for the first time, please enter the Briggs Road gate, turn left, and drive all the way to the end of the parking lot. The roses will be visible. Please bring sharp clippers and sturdy gloves. Dress in layers as it can be quite chilly when we begin. Even though it may be overcast, sun screen and hats are recommended. Water is available.

Notify Sharon McGahan at smcga87190@aol.com by January 11, 2013, if you plan to join us for this very important research project. If it is raining on January 16, the sucker removal will be canceled and rescheduled for another date.

Vets Center in Ventura needs YOU! On Friday January 18th, the first major workday of the year is scheduled from 9am to noon at the Ventura Veteran Center located at 10900 Telephone Road Ventura, CA 93004. The day will start in the Veterans Center lobby where you can sign-in and then move to the gardens for a full morning of projects. We will dig holes, plant trees, and spruce-up gardens. Your work will provide veterans with a greater opportunity to participate in gardening activities. Be sure to bring your own garden tools and a drinking vessel. Contact Barbara Hill at qbarbhill@aol.com by January 14th to let her know you plan to join us.

Want to work directly with the public, educating them about the Master Gardener program, and gardening? Join our Master Gardener Special Projects and Events Committee. We have fun:

•Creating a winning exhibit for the VC Fair
•Selling produce and plants at Faulkner Farm Pumpkin Patch
