The Ventura County Chapter of California Women in Agriculture (CWA) is currently seeking candidates to apply for the 2012 CWA scholarships. The Ventura County Chapter of CWA “strives to promote agriculture awareness and education within our communities.”

We will award a total of $3,500 in scholarships this year. The top scholarship will be $1,000 and the remainder will be $500 each.
Requirements for scholarship applicants must include one of the following:
- Student and/or a parent/guardian have been employed in Ventura County agriculture for the past two (2) years. (Farm laborer, work for an ag-related industry, i.e.; chemical company, packinghouse, well drilling, etc.)
- Student at least a one year member, in good standing, in FFA, 4-H or Grange.
- Student pursuing a Bachelor's degree (4-year), an Associate's degree (2-year) or a degree from an accredited trade school, all in agriculture or related subject areas.

The California Weed Science Society (CWSS) is offering scholarships to support undergraduate and graduate students with an interest in weed or invasive plant management.
To be eligible for these awards the student must be pursuing a degree at an accredited 2-year college or 4-year university in California and be enrolled through the spring 2012 term. Preference will be given to students that demonstrate a strong interest in weed or invasive plant management.
All awards will be given at the discretion of CWSS.
CWSS Scholarships: Academic scholarships up to $2000 are available for undergraduate and graduate students.
- CWSS Internships: The internship is an award of $3000 for an 8-week full-time internship with a University of California farm advisor or other off-campus research personnel with responsibilities in weed or invasive plant management.
- CWSS Undergraduate Research Awards: The undergraduate research award is a grant up to $2000 to support a research project related to weed or invasive plant management.
All applications must be received by April 1, 2012.

The joint meeting of the 58th Annual Conference on Soilborne Plant Pathogens (formerly Soil Fungus Conference) and the 44th Annual California Nematology Workgroup will be held March 20-22, 2012 in San Marino, California at the Huntington Botanical Gardens.
The focus of this year’s symposium will be Ornamental and Landscape Pathology. Speakers will be Akif Eskalen and Antoon Ploeg, University of California, Riverside; and Jim Downer, UC Cooperative Extension, Ventura County.

California Women for Agriculture (CWA) is a volunteer group dedicated to promoting agriculture. With twenty-two chapters and over 2,000 members statewide it is the “most active, all-volunteer, grassroots, agricultural support organization in California.”
Established in 1976 the Ventura County Chapter is one of the founding chapters. Throughout each year dedicated women work together to provide education and outreach opportunities, award scholarships, and promote local agriculture.
Their efforts are guided by the following five objectives:
- To speak on behalf of agriculture in an intelligent, informative, direct, and truthful manner
- To keep CWA members informed on legislative activities pertaining to agriculture
- To join forces with other organizations when the need arises to deal with agricultural issues and challenges
- To share with the public the farmers perspective
- Develop a rapport with consumers, educators, and governmental and business leaders in communities throughout the state

Plans are underway for the 2012 Small Farm Conference. The conference will be held in Valencia (Los Angeles County) March 4-6.
The theme of the 2012 conference is “Cultivating the next generation”. Workshops and field courses will be posted in October.
A scholarship program is in place for those with limited financial means. Scholarship categories are:
- Farmers/Ranchers/Farm or Ranch Employees
- Managers of Certified Farmers’ Markets
- Agricultural Students currently studying agriculture or related field (This category also includes those learning the agricultural trade through vocational or other education programs.)
