The 4-H State Leadership Conference was held at UC Davis July 18-21. The mission of the conference is to give youth the tools to create change in their own communities. At this event, youth were able to connect with almost 300 other 4-Hers from across California with 11 youth members representing San Mateo/San Francisco county. They also participated in hands-on learning and educational workshops led by UC academics and industry professionals and attended fun social activities.

The conference experience is best described by one of our Pacifica 4-H Club members, Sarah Betschart:

 

"While attending the UC Davis state leadership conference, I learned a lot of important things that will definitely affect my student career. For example, I learned a lot about the UC colleges. From what I learned, the UC schools offer a diverse array of majors and beautiful campuses. I definitely plan to apply to some of them. I also learned about college in general and how important it is to enroll in a good one so that I can get a good job in the future. 

 

Besides learning about college, I also learned about ways to help the community. When they gave the presentation about living on one dollar a day, I learned a lot about how small things can make a big impact. For example, during the presentation they showed how a group of people helps a poor community build a business that uses the citizens creativity to make a profit. By just bringing ideas, they were able to turn a small weaving stand into a business that sells to people worldwide. 

 

Overall, I learned a lot during SLC that will make an impact on my future. I am excited to come back next year!"
