Physical Security
Lock your workstation
Protecting UC ANR's digital assets begins with securing your physical workspace. Get into the habit of locking your workstation whenever you step away, even if it's only a moment, and even if you're at home. This prevents unauthorized access to your computer.
To lock a Windows PC: Windows key + L. Or go to the Start Menu > Power > Lock.
To lock a Mac: Control + Command + Q. Or go to the Apple Menu > Sleep.

Prevent tailgating
Tailgating is when an unauthorized individual follows an authorized person into a restricted area. This can compromise the integrity of ANR's workspaces and put sensitive information at risk. Refrain from holding doors open for others. Make sure everyone swipes themselves in or checks in with the front desk. By strictly adhering to access control procedures, we can prevent unauthorized access and safeguard sensitive areas.
Be vigilant in public spaces
Use these tips to stay safe when working in public areas such as cafes, airports, or libraries.
- Never leave devices unattended. Take them with you, or ask someone you trust to watch them.
- Look out for shoulder surfers when entering passwords or sensitive data. Position your device in a way that minimizes visibility to others. Consider using a privacy screen.
- Avoid connecting to public Wi-Fi networks. If you must use public Wi-Fi, connect through a virtual private network (VPN) to protect against potential eavesdropping or interception of sensitive data.
Report security incidents promptly
If any of the following happen:
- Your device is lost or stolen
- You get malware and popups on your device
- You receive phishing emails
- You believe your information may have been compromised
Then please contact the IT help desk by calling (530) 750-1212 or emailing help@ucanr.edu. The faster you report the incident, the faster we can investigate and take action!
