Ask a Master Gardener

Have a question about something in your garden?

Getting help is easy—submit your question to our Help Desk team. We provide free, research-based advice on fruit and vegetable growing, pest and disease identification, lawn and landscape care, soil and composting, water-efficient gardening, and plant selection for our various planting zones in Humboldt and Del Norte Counties. Our volunteers typically respond to email questions within 3-5 business days.

To help us answer your question, we encourage you to upload one to three in-focus digital photos.  You will find links to upload your images when you submit your question.

  • Want to know what that insect is? Include a picture.

  • Wondering what's happening to your shrub? Send us images of the affected area and a healthy area (if available).

  • Close-up photo(s) of symptoms, for example centering on one or a few leaves/needles or the place where green tissue meets discolored tissue; or the areas of suspected insect damage (or the insect itself); an area of the trunk, branch, or twig bark you suspect of being abnormal, such as stem lesions, oozing, bumps, insects, white or other color objects are helpful.
  • Wondering what that plant is? Include a picture.
