Loose Leaves

Summer in the garden moves fast—and so do the updates. From can’t-miss events to helpful tips and timely reminders, here’s a round-up of noteworthy bits and pieces to keep you informed, inspired, and one step ahead in the dirt.

1. Tree Alert: Invasive Beetle Spreading Closer to Contra Costa

The Mediterranean Oak Borer, a destructive beetle that targets and kills stressed valley oaks, was recently detected in Novato—and it’s spreading quickly across Northern California.

Be on the Lookout for These Warning Signs:

  • Sparse or stunted leaf growth
  • Fine sawdust (boring dust) around the trunk or base
  • Oozing sap from small holes in the bark

Take Immediate Action:

  • Do not transport firewood or green waste—this spreads the beetle
  • Destroy infested wood on-site to prevent further infestation

Valley oaks in Contra Costa County are at serious risk. Your awareness and quick action can help protect them.
