Growing roses in many neighborhoods of San Francisco like the West Portal, Parkside, St. Francis Woods, Stonestown and Lakeshore areas can be done very successfully! In this workshop, UC Master Gardener Margaret Warren will cover how to choose and care for roses in these transitional microclimates, which can be windy, foggy or cold at times. She will suggest which roses to plant, the best placement for roses in your garden, routine care, and how to troubleshoot and treat problems should they arise. She'll also provide suggestions for companion plants for roses.

UC Master Gardener Presenter Margaret Warren: Margaret's love of roses began in her dad’s garden, a few blocks from the West Portal Library where she grew up. Her dad could make anything grow, particularly roses, despite the often-present fog. From her dad, Margaret learned that roses were not fragile, but rather hearty plants that frequently did best with as little artificial interference as possible. After getting married, she successfully grew roses in pots in South San Francisco. Following her retirement from UCSF, Margaret decided to up her gardening knowledge base, and in 2011 became a UC Master Gardener.  She currently has over 50 rose bushes in her San Carlos garden, focusing primarily on fragrant and some old garden roses. Margaret is on the Board of the San Mateo County Rose Society, and a member of the Heritage Rose Foundation, the American Rose Society, and two heritage roses groups in California.
