Providing action and intentionality to our shared Principles. Welcome to a monthly series where each month the Workplace Inclusion and Belonging unit spins the dial and spotlights one of UC ANR Principles of Community and turns intention into action.

Join in the unpacking of a new principle every month, learn practical ways to incorporate these values into our daily work, and read highlighted stories of ANR colleagues making a difference. Whether you’re looking to enrich your experience, build inclusive connections, or simply start your month with purpose, you’ll find motivation and achievable ideas right here.

Let’s move beyond words and create a more vibrant, respectful, and welcoming UC ANR community—one principle, and one action, at a time.

Communication

We use respectful language to cultivate trust, foster understanding and create a community where all feel valued and empowered to contribute.

"Communication is a form of respect. If you respect someone, you will work on the way you communicate with them. If you don't, you will be careless."

-Simu Liu, Actor

Actions in the Workplace:
  • Practice active listening and ensure that the speaker knows their voice is being heard and received
  • Encourage open dialogue and constructive feedback to address everyone’s thoughts and opinions
  • Use clear and concise language, and always ask clarifying and follow-up questions to confirm understanding with each other
  • Be mindful of tone and body language—how you say things is just as important as what you say
  • Hold regular check-ins to help team members stay aligned and informed about their goals and responsibilities, and to address questions
  • Ensure various forms of communication are available, including digital communication (emails, messaging apps, etc.) and physical communication tools (papers, sticky notes, etc.)
