NPI paper highlights the value of a school self-assessment questionnaire for studies aiming to measure change in school nutrition and physical activity environments

A new Nutrition Policy Institute research brief summarizes a 2026 study: “Measuring change in school-based practices that promote children’s healthy eating and active living: A psychometric study.” This study evaluated the ability of the previously validated School Site-Level Assessment Questionnaire, or School SLAQ, to detect change in school nutrition and physical activity practices in response to corresponding policy, systems, and environmental, or PSE, change interventions. A key property of measurement tools is sensitivity, the ability to detect meaningful changes over time when they occur. However, it is uncommon for nutrition and physical activity assessments to undergo sensitivity testing. This study demonstrated that the School SLAQ can detect meaningful change in school nutrition and physical activity practices when corresponding interventions take place. Accordingly, the School SLAQ can be a useful research tool to evaluate the impact of school-based PSE interventions. The peer-reviewed study was authored by Carolyn Rider et al. The research brief was created by Carolyn Rider and Miranda Brown.
