Concurrent Session 1E
Risk Assessment, Welfare Analysis, and Extension Education for Dairy Calf Respiratory Disease Management in California (2012-2016)
Sharif Aly, Professor, Veterinary Medicine Teaching & Research Center, UC Davis
Control of Bovine Respiratory Disease Complex (BRDC) is caused by a myriad of factors including in the ubiquity of causative organisms and predisposing factors such as vaccination, stocking density, nutrition, and colostrum but no practical guidelines have been developed for modern dairies. A better understanding of management practices in use on California dairies is an important step in translating existing and future research into practical recommendations for Californian dairymen. Conducted a survey of California dairymen to ascertain the frequency of dairy calf raising practices currently in use across the state that may influence the incidence of BRDC. Survey provided information that will help develop a BRDC risk assessment tool and determined method to make survey more efficient and accurate.
