Zombek, Mary: UC Master Gardener Vol.
Description One of the venues where I volunteer weekly is the Centennial Farm in Costa Mesa. We give an 1.5 hour tour to kindergarten children. Some of the highlights include planting a radish, holding a baby chick, watching a cow get milked, feeling fresh picked cotton, watching the worker bees come back to their hive and smelling and touching fresh herbs. My career before I retired was a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, working for schools in Special Education, where I was known as Nurse Mary. Today I am known as Farmer Mary. The children are always excited to be at the farm. Since I am a Master Gardener, I love taking them through the crops and talking about different vegetables, how they are grown, how they can be propagated and how easy they can do it at home. To be able to give back to the youth of our future has been truly rewarding! (Please note: photo permission is given by every school attending the tours at Centennial Farm - on file with Orange County Centennial Farm).
