Description Once established, both Bougainvillea and Matilija Poppy are drought resistant and pest resistant, making them perfect for California Friendly Gardening examples. Matilija poppy in the genus Romneya was named after the Irish Astronomer John Thomas Romney Robinson. This hillside was probably a hard spot to garden due to water runoff and intense sun. Beautiful from both above and below on the garden paths.
