Submit a Workshop Proposal

Educational Workshops at State Leadership Conference (SLC) are fun and engaging opportunities to learn. Every year, participants rank the workshops as one of their highlights of SLC. Education sessions will be offered on July 27, 2024 at UC Davis.

When reviewing the workshop proposal, the committee evaluation will be based on the following criteria:

  • The content offers a significant contribution to the goals of the conference and can clearly fit into an A 4-H Mission initiative and sub category
  • The workshop has a clearly stated purpose and objectives.
  • The workshop format is dynamic and engages the audience through participation and discussion (use of the experiential learning model).
  • The workshop provides the audience with concrete ideas/models that can be applied in their UC 4-H experience and beyond.

Thank you for your interest in the California 4-H State Leadership Conference. For additional information about 4-H, please visit the State 4-H website.

Proposals will be reviewed an accepted on a rolling basis until June 1 or when the available workshop spaces are filled.

Proposals are due by April 5, 2024

To Workshop Presenters:

As an educational workshop presenter, you will be an integral part of the conference. The success of the conference is directly related to your willingness to work with UC 4-H youth and provide meaningful educational opportunities.

In an effort to provide the highest quality workshops, presenters should:

  • Model the experiential learning cycle.
  • Be fun, engaging and stimulating for participants.
  • Fall under one of the 4-H Mission Initiatives.
  • Fits into a subcategory
  • If possible, follow the theme (Road to Resilience).

Encouraging youth to shape their own impact through cultivating mentorships, learning what it means to be a member of a thriving community, and continuing their personal growth to build their 4-H legacy.

Our past experience shows that a high-quality workshop requires three hours of preparation per hour of presentation. Additionally, you are strongly encouraged to develop material for attendees to take home with them or provide electronic materials that we can upload to our State Website for participants to download.

4-H Mission Initiatives

The Mission of UC 4-H is to provide meaningful opportunities for youth and adults to work together to create sustainable community change. This is accomplished within four primary content areas called Mission Initiatives. Educational sessions should include one of the mission initiatives:

  • 4-H Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) - Provides opportunities for youth to engage in the process of discovery and exploration while developing STEM skills.
  • Healthy Living - Teaches youth to lead and guide others to healthy and productive lives, physically, mentally and emotionally, as they grow into adulthood.
  • Civic Engagement - Encourages youth to become well-informed and engaged citizens of the world.
  • Positive Youth Development -The research-based approach we take in UC 4-H to intentionally provide both support and opportunities for members to reach their full potential and thrive.

Sub-categories

Educational Workshops should also fulfill one of the sub-categories below:

  • Leadership - Develop skills to intentionally provide guidance, direction, and management of self and others. Develop a strong understanding of how to manage leadership roles and responsibilities in roles such as teens as teachers, teen leaders, or club officers.
  • Conflict Resolution and Communication – Improve skills in teamwork and resolving conflicts in positive ways.
  • Youth Adult Partnerships - Inform and develop skills to work effectively in a youth-adult partnership within projects and county programs.
  • Cultural Competence - Enhance youth’s skills in intercultural competency.
  • Public Policy – Activism, advocacy, and how to effect positive change in the community.
  • Mentoring - Help youth grow in their ability to seek mentors through youth-adult partnerships and grow in their ability to mentor others.
  • Facilitation - Effective strategies for leading meetings and events, e.g., parliamentary procedure, time management, etc.
  • College and Career Exploration - Provide insight and opportunities for members to explore college and career goals, e.g., how to fill out applications, write effective resumes, interview skills, etc.
