Cotton Production
Who we are
For nearly a century, California has demonstrated its cotton production leadership through it’s well developed relationships between growers, researchers, government and the support industries. California cotton growers produce some of the highest quality fiber and are among the most productive in the world. As California continues to grow, more natural fibers will be needed. ANR helps cotton growers remain competitive by:
• Increasing production through new variety screening and
advanced farming practices
• Making farms more efficient and profitable
• Helping farmers stop insects and disease from destroying
crops
• Introducing farming methods that use less water
This program is active in supporting the cotton industry through its research and extension programming aimed at cotton producers, the cotton support industry and providing information to the general public. We provide timely meeting outreach support and engage in research project involvement that addresses statewide industry priorities. The Fresno County program actively supports the UC ANR Cotton Workgroup, and conducts research in grower fields and at the WSREC.

Program Update
Some growers learned first-hand of the potential hazard of herbicide drift issues and cotton’s sensitivity to 2,4-D and other synthetic auxins. Though considered safe and effective herbicide products, early summer 2012 applications caused significant symptoms in early developing cotton crops. Read more about the issues of synthetic auxins and their potential impacts to cotton production systems.
