Email Compatibility

Not all email systems are compatible with Duo.  You’ll find a list of supported email clients below.

Make sure that your email client is supported before you enroll in MFA/Duo to avoid service interruption.  The Duo Help Center (https://help.duo.com) is also available for additional support information.

NOTE: Thunderbird, Mac Mail, and the Android native mail app are currently compatible with Duo and DavisMail.  But in the future, as we continue to strengthen the security of our email platforms, some older email clients will no longer work with Duo and DavisMail. We will inform the community about all changes that will affect their ability to access their email, and we will assist them in upgrading their email client to the most secure, supported versions.

Can I still use Mac Mail? Thunderbird? My native smartphone mail app?

Mac Mail, Thunderbird, and the Android native mail app do not yet support Modern Authentication which is required for Duo MFA. If your phone or computer uses one of those clients, you will need to install a new email client that supports Modern Authentication; good options include the Microsoft Outlook app for Android and iOS, and Microsoft Outlook for Mac and Windows.  The "OWA" (Outlook Web App) client for iOS and Android is not the same as the Microsoft Outlook app and does not work with Duo MFA. The iOS native mail app supports Modern Authentication and Duo in version 11 and later, however, after you enable Duo MFA for Office 365 on your iOS device, you will need to remove and re-add your email profile. See http://kb.ucdavis.edu/?id=0159
