From Seed to Harvest Course: Vegetable Gardening for Beginners
Are you ready to grow your own vegetables but don’t know where to start? The UC Master Gardeners of Alameda County are excited to introduce "From Seed to Harvest: Vegetable Gardening for Beginners," an in-person, five-week course designed to help you cultivate a successful and sustainable garden right at home.
Whether you dream of fresh tomatoes, crisp lettuce, or flowers to attract pollinators, this course will guide you through every step—from planning your garden to reaping the rewards of your harvest.
What you’ll learn
In this interactive series, you’ll work with Master Gardener volunteers to:
- Plan your garden: Select the best location, type of garden, and vegetables based on sun exposure, soil conditions, and your unique microclimate.
- Start your garden: Plant seeds and learn how to transplant and protect new seedlings.
- Nurture your plants: Learn about watering, irrigation systems, soil, and nutrients your garden needs.
- Sustain your garden: Discuss harvesting, troubleshooting pests and diseases, and additional techniques to ensure your long-term garden success.
By the end of the course, you’ll leave with the knowledge and skills to start growing right away!

Why we started this program
We’ve heard your questions at our information tables and community events: How do I grow vegetables at home? What can I plant in my microclimate? How do I keep pests away without chemicals? While not everyone has the time to commit to our intensive Master Gardener Volunteer Training Program, we believe everyone should have access to the knowledge they need to grow a productive garden. That’s why we created this short, beginner-friendly course—to empower you to grow with confidence.
