San Carlos Native Plant Habitat Garden

Location: 610 Elm St, San Carlos, CA 94070 (Between the San Carlos Library and San Carlos Administration Buildings at City Hall)

Status: Open to the public

Master Gardeners have created a beautiful native habitat garden and ecosystem, designed to be low maintenance, educational, and teeming with life. The habitat and ecosystem were developed by planting a diverse community of native plants (flora) to attract fauna that all live, interact, and support each other in the environment. Native flora, mostly perennials, were chosen based on their contribution to the ecosystem by providing food for wildlife, attracting birds and other pollinators.

This 8,000 square foot demonstration garden was developed in partnership with the City of San Carlos.  Started in late 2019, the native habitat garden has had one full growing season. Its location near the library, city hall, police department, and dog park, provides free and easy access for the community.

Master Gardener volunteers work at the garden each week and regularly interact with the public. When social distancing restrictions are lifted, Master Gardeners will host public demonstrations and talks at the garden.

The Native Plant Habitat Garden is three years old.  It is a demonstration garden reflecting the use of low water plants, without the usage of chemicals, pesticides or fertilizers.  In addition to the aesthetic appeal of this low-maintenance garden, docents will point out the habitat features that invite native birds, bees, butterflies and other fauna to live, interact and support each other in this environment.

The Herb Garden is divided into several sections: Mediterranean, California Native, Latin, Mint, and Eastern.  It is a venue to demonstrate how to grow and care for a variety of herbs.  The goal is to explore this garden by using touch, smell and taste.
