Our locally based team continues to access and collaborate with University of California campus colleagues on a variety of projects and programs.  A few examples include:

Dr. James Baird, Turfgrass Management Specialist in UC Riverside’s Botany and Plant Sciences Department, installed trails of water saving grass varieties across California including Marin County. The goal of his work is to provide recommendations for water saving turf varieties that match the diverse growing conditions across California.

Dr. Deanne Meyer, Livestock Waste Management Specialist in UC Davis’ Department of Animal Science, and the California Dairy Quality Assurance Program, provided training and one-on-one assistance for area dairy producers to understand and implement water quality improving practices. This education has proved fundamental for compliance with strict water quality regulations and improvement of dairy operations and watershed conditions.

Weed and grassland management trials to remove and replace rosy sand crocus

Dr. Elise Gornish, Restoration Ecology Specialist in UC Davis’ Plant Sciences Department, collaborated with Point Reyes National Seashore Staff and ranchers on the management of weeds in rangelands, including rosy sand crocus. These weeds have, in some cases, spread to an expanse and density that they are limiting rangland plant diversity and productivity. Dr. Gornish’s work focuses on the removal of these weeds and equally important the restoration of the plant community long-term.
