MKAT collaboration statement

MKAT is a coalition of various land managers (comprised of local, state and federal agencies and non-profit organizations) who are dedicated to sustaining a vibrant and resilient Lagunitas Creek watershed, specifically the control and long-term eradication of Japanese knotweed (Fallopia japonica) from the area, including the San Geronimo Creek subwatershed. Japanese knotweed is listed as one of the top ten most invasive weeds in the world, and if left unmanaged can dramatically affect the health and function of the region’s creek and salmonid habitat. Successful eradication, as demonstrated in other parts of the world, requires a coordinated effort among the watershed’s public and private landowners and resource managers. MKAT partners will be working together throughout the Lagunitas Creek watershed to encourage and support the necessary public participation to eradicate Japanese knotweed.

Our approach to this work is guided by the best scientific understanding and lessons learned from successful case studies. As a coalition, we intend to leverage our individual resources to improve the watershed’s ecological integrity by managing threats such as Japanese knotweed, thereby helping to protect and support the landowners living in this area. Working closely with affected landowners to answer their questions and address their concerns is of utmost importance to the success of this eradication program. Each partner’s work will be guided under existing agency and organizational policies.
