Nature and Purpose: This is a search for an Extension Specialist in Weed Science for Specialty Crops at the assistant or associate professor level. This 12-month position is tenure track or, if appropriate, tenured. The Specialist is a member of the Department of Plant Biology and provides statewide leadership to county and state faculty and others serving the specialty crop (small fruit, tree fruit, vegetable, wine grapes, Christmas trees, floriculture, and nursery) industries. The Specialist provides expertise in weed science through research and interpretation of research results in the areas of weed ecology and improved management and environmental practices, including integrated crop (pest) management. The Specialist develops and coordinates the materials and resources supporting county and state educational programming in weed science and management. Through research and engagement with the New Jersey specialty crops industries, the Specialist provides support for the long-term health of these industries and serves as a critical bridge in networking with allied fields. The Specialist participates in undergraduate and/or graduate teaching and advises undergraduate and/or graduate independent research projects in the field of expertise.
Qualifications: A Ph.D. in weed science, plant science, plant ecology, agronomy, horticulture, or a related discipline from an accredited institution is required. Faculty, postdoctoral, or industry experience is preferred. The successful candidate must have expertise and broad knowledge in at least one of two areas, with sufficient familiarity in the other: i) plant sciences as related to weed science and management that acknowledges the diversity of plants in use and adaptation within the specialty crop industries; and ii) knowledge of technology / engineering used in weed management (for example, chemical and biological control, mechanisms of herbicide resistance, and weed biology). The successful candidate must have the ability to garner competitive grant funding; organize and evaluate educational programs; plan and execute research ideas that contribute to the advancement of an innovative, nationally-recognized research program that leads to measurable impacts; guide and advise professional staff (such as postdoctoral associates and technicians) in planning, conducting, and disseminating research-based results and recommendations to stakeholders; and understand and practice the philosophy of cooperative endeavors by teaming with specialists, agents, state agencies, stakeholders, and researchers in other disciplines and in other states as necessary.
