Why Eat Peppers?

May 28, 2014

To all the lovely people,

Do you like peppers? Here are some reasons why you might want to start or continue growing and eating them. Pepper plants should be in the ground now and will start producing in mid summer (at lease here in Aromas). Our friend Tina brought us a plant called "Big Bomb" a few days ago and I am looking forward to their taste. What varieties are you growing this year?

HEALTHY REASONS TO ENJOY PEPPERS

1. They are helpful for respiratory problems. Peppers contain an ingredient called capsaicin which stimulates the lungs to work as best they can. This can help treat bronchitis, asthma, and other breathing problems. Smokers should eat peppers at least once a day.

2. They can stop you from getting sick. Peppers have anti inflammatory properties which fight off colds and flues. If you have a nasal drip or are congested eating peppers can relieve symptoms. Chili peppers have long been used to cure head colds.

3. They contain high amounts of vitamin C. Vitamin C is essential to promote overall health and peppers are one of the greatest sources of this vitamin. Generally the hotter the pepper the more vitamin C it contains but bell peppers also contain this vitamin. Some research suggests vitamin C may defend from some types of cancers.

4. They can prevent blood clot formation. As peppers contain capsaicin, vitamin C, and flavonoids, they can thin the blood and prevent blood clots. This also reduces the risk for heart attacks and strokes.

5. They are great for weight loss. Peppers contain virtually no calories but are extremely high in nutrients that the body needs. Using them when cooking will fill you up and satisfy you while giving your body all of the health benefits that it needs.
