Phytophthora ramorum / Redwoods Tour - Marin County
$45 / person includes lunch 8 am -5 pm Wednesday Nov. 9, 2011
NORS DUC Research Facility
This all-day tour will begin at the National Ornamentals Research Site at Dominican University of California (NORS-DUC) in the morning. NORS-DUC is the first research facility in the United States dedicated to the study of pests and diseases affecting the health of ornamental plants. It is a secure location that is designed to reflect a nursery for the purpose of performing studies on nursery stock in a “real world” setting while ensuring high-level safeguards are in place to prevent the escape of pests being studied (such as P. ramorum), as well as the introduction of pests from outside of the facility, that may affect plant health. Attendees will also visit a stream baiting demonstration and hear presentations from USDA Forest Service, Cal Fire, UC Cooperative Extension, and state and federal officials on how this disease has impacted the West Coast. In the afternoon, there will be a field trip to Muir Woods National Monument to walk amongst the tall redwoods and observe P. ramorum actively causing disease in a natural forest landscape. During bus travel time, there will be time for questions and answers about P. ramorum with your bus host as well as the opportunity to take in spectacular views of the San Francisco Bay and Pacific Ocean.
