Biography

Maung was born and raised in Myanmar where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural sciences. After completing her bachelor’s degree, Maung received a VLIR-UOS scholarship awarded by Flemish Interuniversity Council (VLIR) of Belgium, where she was given the opportunity to accomplish a master’s degree in Nematology at Ghent University in 2004 and a doctoral degree in bioscience engineering at K.U. Leuven in 2011. Her master thesis researched the effect of banana root deposition on motility and chemotaxis of the burrowing nematode. Her doctoral work concentrated on studying sustainable management of the rice root nematode on monsoon rice in Myanmar by exploring resistant cultivars and investigating the effect of different crop rotation practices. In 2012, she came to Michigan State University as a research scholar to conduct soil health management research in different soil types, and in different cropping systems of row crops (corn, soybean, sugar beets) by using nematode communities as a bio-indicator. Maung joined the Nematology department at UC Riverside in 2015 as a staff research associate stationed at the Kearney Ag Center. The most recent research and extension program focused on management of plant parasitic nematodes in tree, nut and vine crops by using resistant rootstocks, application of anaerobic soil disinfestation (ASD) methods, and using different chemical treatments. Maung is ready to apply the IPM approaches that she learned working with plant parasitic nematodes of annuals and perennials on integrated management of different pests and diseases of other crops including vegetables. She is excited to help in solving existing issues and challenges of small-scale and diversified farmers of California's San Joaquin Valley.
