Drone Discovery on 4-H National Youth Science Day!

Oct 6, 2016

October 5th was the annual 4-H National Youth Science Day.  This event is sponsored by National 4-H, but local projects and groups host sites where youth participate in a fun and hands-on science activity.

This year's project was Drone Discovery.  Participants learned about basic aviation concepts, such as thrust and air resistance, and crafted small foam gliders to test out how to achieve lift, distance, and turning abilities.  The group also discussed drones and their usage.  What problems can be solved with drones?  When are there better alternatives to drone usage?  How do we address concerns such as privacy and safety?

San Joaquin County 4-H hosted a site at the County Office of Education on the evening of the 5th.  Approximately 25 youth from half a dozen different 4-H clubs participated, and everyone left with smiles and new knowledge.  The event was facilitated by Shayne Rivers of Calla 4-H.

The County 4-H Office will keep the materials kit and instruction guides for the project in the 4-H learning Center, so clubs and projects are welcome to check out the activity at any time.
