2022 Nut Chair Call

2022 Call - UC Cooperative Extension Presidential Chairs for Tree Nuts

We invite applications for two Presidential chair positions which will be available July 2022. These Chairs, generously supported by an endowment from the California Pistachio Research Board and the UC Office of the President, provide up to 5 years of operating funds (around $42k per year) to support nut production research and outreach (with an emphasis on Pistachios) throughout California. 

Chairs available.

1. Presidential Chair for Tree Nut Genetics 

2. Presidential Chair for Tree Nut Soil Science and Plant Water Relations. 

 

UCCE citrus and pistachio crops advisor in Kern County, Craig Kallsen, was the inaugural Presidential Chair for Tree Nut Genetics and UCCE integrated orchard management specialist Bruce Lampinen, based at UC Davis, was the UC Cooperative Extension Presidential Chair for Tree Nut Soil Science and Plant Water Relations.  

Eligibility

Chair holder applicants must be a UC Cooperative Extension advisor or specialist currently working in the area of California-grown Nut research and extension. Current holders may reapply.

Timeline and What to Submit 

Those interested should send a 2-3 page submission (with appendices if and/or as needed) by April 4 2022 to Mark Bell, UC ANR Vice Provost of Strategic Initiatives and Statewide Programs, via email mozbell@ucanr.edu by 5:00 p.m.

The successful applicants will be announced April 30 2022, and funds to support work will be available July 1 2022.

  1. Clearly indicate if you are applying for 
    1. the Genetics Chair or 
    2. The Soil and Water Chair, and
  2. Address the criteria laid out in the following table.
  3. Provide your Resume.

Relevance of the proposed scope of work to the improvement of California Nut  production and quality with an emphasis on pistachios (as stipulated by the Board).

 

Work plan - anticipated outcomes and anticipated impacts.

(Note: An annual report is required.)

 

Budget* how funds will be utilized. Note: The estimated annual payout is approximately $42,000.

 

Collaborators: internal and/or external.

 

Other: e.g., letters of support, C.V., relevance to other work in this area, why this work is groundbreaking, etc.
