Evaluation of Smart Controller Impacts in Orange County, CA

In the summer of 2003, the Municipal Water District of Orange County (MWDOC) received a grant to provide funding assistance for the installation of 1,700 smart irrigation controllers in residential and commercial sites in Orange County, CA. Eight brands of controllers were installed by both professionals and homeowners. The 2008 report, Pilot Implementation of Smart Timers: Water Conservation, Urban Runoff Reduction, and Water Quality, describes the project design and reports data for irrigation water savings and compares urban runoff water quality and flow pre- and post-smart controller installation for two distinct neighborhoods.
