In this session participants will take a close look at different curriculum and discuss the pros and cons of how it can be used in a variety of 4-H type settings. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to engage in quiz bowls, skeleton stations, and judging classes. Discussion on how they can apply these experiences directly to their own 4-H work, no matter what the setting.

How many ways can you make fire? The 5-minute fire, 1-match fire and fire-by-friction utilizing the bow-drill will be discussed and you’ll have the chance for hands-on learning. You won’t ever forget the first time you make fire primitively, which rarely happens on your first try…so keep practicing. We will also explore the use of fire-making as an inspirational motivator toward deeper lessons in patience, cooperation, perseverance, support, and unity. This is a group of 4-H staff from California, Idaho, Wyoming, New Jersey, and Louisiana, focusing on how first-year 4-H members and families describe their experience in the program. This session will review the findings from 3 years of data, and will discuss the implications for our program in retaining youth after their first year in 4-H.
