Experiences of First Year 4-Her's: Findings from the Youth Retention Study

This is a group of 4-H staff from California, Idaho, Wyoming, New Jersey, and Louisiana, focusing on how first-year 4-H members and families describe their experience in the program. This session will review the findings from 3 years of data, and will discuss the implications for our program in retaining youth after their first year in 4-H.

Success and Sleep at Overnight 4-H Events

If you knew there was one thing you could do at your 4-H event that would lead to the overall success would you do it? Participants will learn how sleep impacts every area of a youth’s experiences at an overnight event, and how to have a successful event and everyone still gets enough sleep. Participants will: Increase understanding of the importance of sleep at youth events and develop skills in creating a schedule that encompasses both program content and adheres to sleep recommendations for youth.

Reframing the 4-H Conflict Resolution Process

This session will use scenarios and ask participants to act out the scenarios using a conflict approach vs. an incident approach to conflict. We will use the ELM to guide the whole workshop. B. Conflict is a big part of 4-H and our daily lives. This session will challenge participants to rethink how they approach conflict resolution, and apply it to their 4-H experience.

Understanding Emotions

During this session, there will be multiple hands-on activities to learn to understand your own emotions, use tools to help keep your emotions under control, learn to read others' emotions and understand how you are reacting, as well as learning how to adapt and react to your own emotions. Being able to control your emotions will not only expand your leadership skills and experiences. but it will also ensure wise decision making will be put into effect. These tools will be able to bring out true emotions of members and ensure their emotions will not be overheated or shy.

What is a Tablescape and Where Does Menu Planning Fit In?

Description
Those attending will be involved in a hands-on table setting activity and discussion. Participants will be able to put together a themed tablescape and menu. Guidelines for 4-H project areas change over time. 4-H contests, such as the Tablesetting Contest, must be updated to reflect the changes. Participants will learn creative ways to use a themed tablescape to create a menu that represents the new food plate and see how this contest can be adapted to meet specific program or fair requirements.

Lessons from the Barn: Engaging Animal Science Curriculum for Adult and Youth Leaders

Description
In this workshop, a lesson from “Bio-security in 4-H Animal Science,” will be highlighted as well as other state recommended animal science curriculum. This session will bring current animal science training to participants and provide examples of how to include youth on both sides- as leaders and as learners - through a practice and discussion time. Participants will jump right into an activity, then discuss what happened – using the five senses- and finally analyze what’s important, why does it matter, and what’s next. The session emphasizes the importance of working with youth to practice and guide the lessons.

Art Exploration

Explore the basic elements of design, how to apply design principles, and create 2 art works (DO). We will practice guided critiquing, a self-evaluation process and sharing (REFLECT) and learn how the two art curricula fit together along with the Elements and Principles of Design Card (APPLY) resulting in a rich art project and experience. Participants will have a clear understanding of how to offer a 4-H art project to youth and how to support the critiquing process to build skills.

CS Pathway Part B Hands On

Provides participants an opportunity to try programs and participate in an offline activity. Current CS Pathway leaders will share their successes and mistakes. The sheer breadth and depth of resources for CS activities can be overwhelming, especially for those unfamiliar with the field. Participants will learn about a set of proven activities, the resources found in the 4-H CS Playbook and curricula used in 4-H programs, including computer-based options and unplugged activities that require no electronics to do. Shelter Building and Staying Alive

Creating your home away from home in the woods doesn’t take an engineering degree but it does take some practice. We’ll show you one tried and true method of shelter building with the chance for hands-on learning. We’ll also go over the four parts of the survival order: shelter, water, fire, food, and what you need to know to survive a night in the woods or a natural disaster situation.
