I am writing as the Coordinator of the Mendocino County Food Policy Council. As an advisory group representing Mendocino County's food and farming community and as shepherds of our 2014 Food Action Plan, we want to offer our unanimous approval of this position. This position will be of great help to our farmers who seek the expertise of someone skilled in Integrated Pest Management practices. Many of our local farmers do so with organic methods; they devote much time and energy to working within nature's brilliant systems. As a community, we are working hard, together, to build a resilient food system that feeds everyone. We strongly encourage the funding of this position.
I am writing in support of the funding of the Area Plant Path Advisor. For the many farmers in the north coast region, growing organically is not just a matter of philosophy, but one of economic survival. The ability to tap into markets that demand produce grown without the use of conventional pesticides allows a number of growers access to markets and the ability to command a higher price. For growers struggling to compete with the large producers in the Central Valley, whom have the massive advantage of scale, this advantage is critical. At the recent 2nd annual North Coast Farmers Convergence, one of the most highly sought out resources, was the Integrated Pest Management specialist. Having a full time advisor position would provide growers a more consistent link to this valuable information. This will allow growers to adapt over time to changing conditions and have ongoing feedback from a knowledgeable expert. Please support the creation of this position.
I write in support of the Area Plant Pathology Advisor North Coast. I am a Mendocino County resident who supports all efforts to increase Integrated Pest Management practices in the county. Protecting our natural pollinators - the bees - is a critical example of why this is so important to all of us. Our emerging Specialty Food sector includes many small farms whose owners are requesting ongoing access to UC research on healthy farm practices. The creation of this position can be an integral step to provide that access. Please support the creation of this position on the North Coast.
As coordinator for The Gardens Project of NCO, dedicated to the development of a local food system through community and school gardens, we are frequently calling upon UCCE to assist in workshops, research, and training for the hundreds of new food producers engaged in the garden,. A UCCE position dedicated to Plant Pathology would greatly increased the capacity of our local food producers to cultivate crops in the most productive and lease toxic manner possible. We strongly support the creation of this position.
