We are observing first hand how the climate is changing in the great Central Valley. Before we can test adaptive practices, we nee to first make sure we have the climatology parts correct. This position will be a valuable resource to all of us crops Farm Advisors.
The California Tree Nut Research & Extension Planning Group, representing almonds, pistachios and walnuts supports this position. Our past experience working with Rick Snyder demonstrates the need and value of working with bio meteorologists in developing state-of-the art freeze/frost protection, particularly as technology, modeling and telemetry have advanced. In another area, bio meteorologists like Rick Snyder working with irrigation specialists have provided the technology and expertise to refine evapotranspiration for crop irrigation scheduling. Going forward the role of bio meteorologist will be heightened because of climate change impacts. These impacts include changing weather and the impact on crop and pest phenology, and the impact of weather and climate on crop chilling and heat stress.
