Associated Documents

The Napa Valley Vintners, the non-profit trade association representing 500 wineries in the Napa Valley, wholly supports the effort by the UC Davis Departments of Viticulture and Enology and Food Science and Technology to establish a position for an Environmental Microbiology-Environmental Engineer Cooperative Extension Specialist.

Although the process of growing grapes uses far less water than other major California grown crops, the process of making wine does require water use for sanitation purposes. Vintners are always looking for ways to minimize their water use and participation in environmental certification programs, such as Napa Green, is one way vintners have sought to reduce their use and conserve. Nevertheless, as the current drought has shown, research and innovation related to how we use and reuse water is absolutely essential to move our industry further towards complete sustainability.

Production efficiency presents the largest opportunity to the California wine industry to achieve our sustainability goals and to reduce overall inputs and outputs. Creating and filling this position would be a substantial and meaningful step towards serving the production needs of wineries currently unrepresented in the UCCE system, but would also provide the opportunity to synthesize and apply new technologies and emerging research in real time.

The establishment of this position could not be more timely. The Napa Valley Vintners fully supports this application.

American Vineyard Foundation (support for Specialist in Environmental Microbiology/Environmental Engineering)

The American Vineyard Foundation fully supports the need for a position in the Department of Viticulture and Enology at UC Davis that will develop an active water use and conservation program with emphasis in the area of environmentally sound cleaning and sanitation technologies for the wine industry. In an effort to underscore greater attention to water conservation in California, the American Vineyard Foundation views the staffing of the position of Cooperative Extension Specialist in Environmental Microbiology and Environmental Engineering as an important step in addressing water conservation for the wine industry and recognizes the need for work in this area.
The position will focus on achieving a more sustainable method of water use for winery production facilities and shall enhance the image and economic viability of the industry. This aligns well with the initiatives related to water quality and quantity, sanitation practices and sustainable systems which are significant concerns for supporters of the American Vineyard Foundation. This position will also be a key component in creating a vigorous extension program focused towards winery sustainability providing leadership for the industry while maintaining awareness of the latest research with regard to sound sanitation and water use practices.
