California Citrus Mutual heartedly endorses the need for a new citrus advisory position in the San Joaquin Valley. ANR budget and CO OP Extension cuts several years have a negative impact on the industry's well being in our view. It's not that existing personnel are doing a bad job, on the contrary they are exemplary in their approach to industry needs. But the challenges facing the industry are greater in number and larger in scope. The present job need and description hits the high profile subjects but omits needs for addressing trade barriers, irrigation evaluations, food safety and sustainability topics. Growers are reevaluating existing planting so and as the Florida industry suffers consequences associated with HLB, the California industry is looked upon to fill voids. Can we do what is necessary in this Valley? Presently, according to USD,A we supply 85% of the nation's fresh citrus needs. If we are to sustain that position, continue to have food security and continue to ward off pest and disease challenges, "boots on the ground" via the University are a necessary resource. The interaction between the University and the industry is greater than ever. The need for greater interaction is also greater than ever before. Sustaining the family farmer in an environmentally sensitive fashion can be accomplished via UC Co-op extension technical expertise. I urge the University to commit to this position and fund it immediately.
