037 Area Small Farms-Local Food Systems Advisor Butte Glenn Tehama

Proposed Location/Housing

Butte County Cooperative Extension, Oroville, CA

Proposed Area of Coverage

Position will cover the small farm specialty crop needs in Butte, Glenn, and Tehama Counties.

Almost all Small Farm operations need advise and mentoring to be successful, especially during their first few years. In a time when farmers are becoming a scarcity, it would seem the most progressive action to take is the availability and prescence of an advisor from the Agricultural/educational community. Please fill this position.

Butte County has seen amazing and successful growth in its small family farms, and is developing agri-tourism that supports those endeavors. From olives to apricots to goats, beef, quail and turkey, vineyards - and a lot of emphasis on organic produce and organic husbandry - all truly benefit from expert advice to achieve and sustain a successful small farm venture. Please support the position of Area Small Farms and Local Food Systems Advisor.

The California Rangeland Conservation Coalition (Rangeland Coalition) would like to express support for the Small Farms-Local Food Systems Specialist position for Butte, Tehama and Glenn Counties.

The Rangeland Coalition is an unprecedented group of ranchers, environmental organizations, scientists and government agencies who are major California rangeland stakeholders. Together, signatories strive to enhance and preserve private working landscapes. We feel strongly a need for this position to support small farmers and ranchers. Working landscapes California are not only producing food and fiber but also provide multiple environmental benefits such as wildlife habitat, open space, recreation and others.

Rangeland Coalition signatories are confident that this position would provide the expertise required to allow support farmers and ranchers diversify their income, support local food systems and increase the viability of working landscapes in California.
