This is a dynamic time for farmers in Southern California. Water pricing is a driving issue as is the cost of land and the availability of labor. These issues are causing existing and aspiring farmers to look at crop and cultural alternatives. In most cases the crops will be high-value, which means high-investment and high-risk. For these farmers to have a sustainable farm business they will need expert and academic assistance with feasibility, economics, risk management, and budgeting. This position will be an important companion to the research and development already being done on crop selection and growing conditions.
