Land-Grab Universities: Owning The Truth And Sharing The Path To Making Amends
Oct. 6, 2021, 9-11 a.m. PT

A symposium in October will highlight some of the work being done at The Ohio State University to better understand their history as a Land Grant institution and make amends with Tribes.

Additional info and registration: https://u.osu.edu/landgranttruth/speaker-series/.

If you're curious to see where the Morrill Act land grants in California were located, Andy Lyons of IGIS created an interactive map at http://bit.ly/ca-morrill-map. "An interesting factoid is only 8.5% of the 1.7 millions acres transferred in California under the Morrill Act went to support UC. The rest went to fund the endowments of land grant institutions in other states," he said. (Click here to see which state got the most land in California).

Organizations reap the benefits of diversity—when employees bring their whole, authenticselves to work. Diverse teams are more productive, innovative, and engaged. Authenticity at work includes sharing and speaking up about work and life experiences that may be different based on one's identity. Developing the skills to conduct meaningful conversations on potentially polarizing topics such as race, religion, and gender is critical for human resources professionals, managers, and team leaders. Mary-Frances Winters offers a multistep process for building the skills necessary to engage in inclusive conversations. Find out how to conduct an exploratory self-assessment to better understand yourself and your team, learn tactics to go from polarization to common ground, and discover practical techniques for discussing difficult topics. How to Give Constructive Feedback to Your Boss (LinkedIn Learning blog post)
By Rachel Parnes

In a professional setting, we're all used to our managers providing us with feedback, both positive and negative. But what happens when the tables are turned—when you disagree with something your manager said, or how they're handling a situation?

It can be tricky to open up that conversation and give feedback up the chain.

“Most of us don't want to tell someone something that we think they don't want to hear, especially if that someone has more of a senior title,” says Amy Bateman in How to Give Negative Feedback to Senior Colleagues (Course – 19 minutes). But if you do it well, she says, your professional relationships will be improved, not damaged. Click here to read more.

Empathy
Psychology Today says Empathy is "...the ability to recognize, understand, and share the thoughts and feelings of another person, animal, or fictional character. Developing empathy is crucial for establishing relationships and behaving compassionately. It involves experiencing another person's point of view, rather than just one's own, and enables prosocial or helping behaviors that come from within, rather than being forced."
