Annual Project & Program Summit - Impact Collaborative

The Extension Foundation invites teams of Cooperative Extension faculty, staff and their community partners from member institutions to its annual Impact Collaborative Project & Program Summit.

The Impact Collaborative Summit helps increase Cooperative Extension's organizational readiness and capacity for innovation and change by connecting teams with skills, tools, resources, and partners that can expand and deepen their impact. Participating teams will receive one-on-one support from coaches to help identify gaps in their project and program planning and have access to our network of expert Key Informants to help fill those gaps.     

Registration Information: The Impact Collaborative Summit is a team event. All participants must be part of a team to participate. Community partners are encouraged to participate on teams. We highly recommend sending teams that include three to eight individuals focused on a project or program aligned with state/institutional strategic priorities and/or community issues.

The bylaws state the foundation's purpose is "Helping Cooperative Extension professionals make a visible and measurable impact on local issues." The Extension Foundation mid-year update details funding, impacts and progress towards helping Cooperative Extension professionals advance their work. Connecting DEI and Employee Experience Initiatives (Gartner)

To create a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment for all employees, HR professionals must integratediversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) strategy into organizational employee experience practices. Many organizations focus on DEI as a set of initiatives with outcomes that are different and separate from those of employee experience initiatives. However, to realize a fully diverse and inclusive workforce, DEI must be integrated into employee experience.

HR professionals are investing heavily in employee experience improvements to increase employees' satisfaction, including onboarding updates, flexible work policies, parental leave and L&D programs. HR professionals are even adding DEI-related investments into their employee experience improvements, including DEI training and diversity recruiting. Despite these efforts, only 13% of employees indicate they are currently fully satisfied with their experience.

To be fully satisfied with their experience, employees need to be able to bring their full selves to work without negative repercussions. Eighty-two percent of employees say it's important for their organizations to see them as a person, not just an employee; however, only 45% of employees believe their organizations actually see them this way. When organizations see employees as people, they invest in creating an environm­­ent that is inclusive, where employees feel like they are safe and belong. By integrating DEI into the employee experience rather than adding on DEI investments, employees can more comfortably bring their full selves to work. Click here to read more. Giving Life to the ANR Principles of Community

It will be a fun collaborative session. We'll use a 15-minute breakout session and a collaborative platform tool to share the behaviors we have done or should do to embrace these principles.

  • Appreciate and celebrate differences and diversity

Leadership in the City

Leadership in the City is a professional development program for Extension professionals working in urban areas who aim to be locally relevant, responsive statewide, and recognized nationally. 

In the first four years of the program, 103 Extension professionals from 31 states have participated. Here's what some of your peers had to say:

This online professional development program will help you learn about leadership, networks, innovation, marketing, management and more. You will learn from experienced leaders; apply what you learn in your city, region, or state; engage in critical thinking and creative problem solving; and participate in online learning. The final session of the course will be held in conjunction with the 2022 National Urban Extension Conference (May 23-26) in New Jersey.

The investment in the program is $500 plus a commitment to work hard and have fun investing approximately 8 hours per month. The five-month online course begins in January 2022. Burnout - (Part of the UC Davis Resilience Series)

Burnout is not a personal failing nor a badge of honor. It is an "occupational phenomenon" recently (but actually before COVID) added to the World Health Organization classification of diseases.  It is defined as a syndrome of exhaustion, cynicism and inefficacy. The tagline for the presentation is "Why are we so Exhausted?" The presentation explores the neurobiology behind our demanding new ways of working and explains that sense of depletion, negative feelings about work and increased difficulty with motivation. We explore scientific data to see why videoconferencing is so draining, the effects of (normally helpful) brain short cuts called cognitive associations and some common feelings we are seeing across the workforce today. Introduction to Google Earth Engine

The goals of this workshop are to introduce you to the Earth Engine interface, import Sentinel (satellite) imagery, export a composite NDVI image, and analyze changes in NDVI over time.

We will take advantage of the up-to-date and easy-to-access satellite imagery in Earth Engine to calculate and analyze changes in a vegetation index (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, or NDVI) from recent Sentinel imagery at the Sierra Foothills Research and Extension Center. First, we'll focus on the fundamentals that are needed to explore the Earth Engine API, including familiarity with JavaScript and common Earth Engine commands. Next, we'll work through several basic tasks, ultimately building towards a simple analysis of NDVI over time and exporting a change image. The main goal of the workshop is to make the case that surmounting the initial hurdle of using JavaScript in EE is worth the payout in computational power and speed. Therefore, wherever you end up in this workflow is a success. Here are the main tasks you can look forward to completing:

  • Run basic commands in JavaScript
  • Search for and add Sentinel imagery an Earth Engine Script
  • Print imagery datasets to the console to explore metadata
  • Add images to the map and change display settings
  • Construct a simple graph showing changes in NDVI over time within a rangeland ecosystem
  • Calculate the change in NDVI and export the result

We must attend to impact as well as understand historical and contemporary context; how our biases can show up; and how accessibility, privilege and power shape the work we do. But, scientists and experts don't often learn these approaches in their training.

During this session, we will discuss some of the challenges, successes and lessons we've learned in our work here at UCS. You'll also have the opportunity to examine your own experiences and opportunities for applying justice-centered approaches to your work. Learning from our collective experiences and digging into our individual goals, barriers and opportunities, we'll prepare ourselves and support each other in working towards science for justice, including partnering with communities.

In response to the rise in Anti-Asian/American and xenophobic harassment,  Hollaback! partnered with Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC to adapt a free bystander intervention training as well as offering a de-escalation training to meet this moment. Hollaback! invites you to attend their free bystander intervention trainings:

The one-hour, interactive training will teach you Hollaback!'s 5D's of bystander intervention methodology. We'll start by talking about the types of disrespect that Asian and Asian American folks are facing right now — from microaggressions to violence — using a tool we call the “spectrum of disrespect.” You'll learn what to look for and the positive impact that bystander intervention has on individuals and communities. We'll talk through five strategies for intervention: distract, delegate, document, delay and direct; and how to prioritize your own safety while intervening. We'll have time at the end for practice, and you'll leave feeling more confident intervening the next time you see Anti-Asian/American harassment online or in person.

Bias, in its most simplistic definition, is having a preference for one thing over another. Also, biases come into play in our impressions and judgment of people, especially those whose identities and experiences are different from our own.

Workshop leaders are Mikael Villalobos, Associate Chief Diversity Officer in the Office for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at UC Davis, and Eric Sanchez, Diversity and Inclusion Educator, UC Davis.

Who should attend: Those who have not participated in this type of learning are encouraged to register. Priority will be given to people who have not had previous access to this learning topic. There will be a waiting list for those who are interested but regularly engage with bias-related topics.

Objectives: We will explore how we make snap judgments about people by understanding our socialization that informs our biases.

Participants will be introduced to theory and language in understanding implicit and explicit bias.

Using personal reflection, experiential exercises and case studies, participants will gain greater awareness when they engage in bias and gain essential knowledge and skills (tools) in how they recognize and mitigate biases in both personal and professional domains.

By participating in one of these workshops, you have the opportunity to support the ANR Strategic Plan 2020-2025 Goal to develop an inclusive and equitable workplace, and employ a workforce that reflects the racial, ethnic, and gender diversity of California.

Negative feedback is inconsistent with our self-image and so we reject it.

“Soliciting feedback” is just what the words imply. It is when we solicit opinions from people about what we are doing wrong. As simple as it sounds, it is not always so simple. Most people have two problems dealing with negative feedback. This may not sound like many, but they are big problems. The first is we don't want to hear it and the second is we don't want to give it.

The reason we don't want to hear it is because negative feedback is inconsistent with our self-image and so we reject it. Did you know that of all the classes I've taught 95% of members believe they are in the top half of their group? While this is statistically impossible, it is psychologically real. Proving to successful people that they are “wrong” works just about as well as making them change. Click here to read more.

Say someone on your team misses a deadline. Do you address it right away or do you wait to see if it becomes a pattern? If you do address it, how do you go about giving that feedback? Feedback is a critical aspect of managing a team. The more often you provide it, the better. It's important to provide both positive and constructive feedback to the people on the teams you manage, individually and collectively. It's best to keep these conversations simple and frequent. Most of us have had some momentary feelings of inferiority when looking over the résumé of a friend or job applicant. When you look at someone else's shining educational and professional accomplishments, it's easy to feel that the person in question is far more impressive than yourself.

But any accomplished résumé – or CV, as non-Americans and some in the professional class like to call them – hides secrets. If you could read between the lines of the many successes that are recorded in a résumé, you would probably see far more failures: schools people didn't get into; scholarship essays that were toiled over and rejected; job applications that now seem harebrained.

But its more of the interactions with other that causes distress. I find my boss as well as a few others around the office to be high stress individuals or unhappy. Since I transfer those emotions easily over to myself it ends up making me moody too. How can I deal with that? Sometimes it feels like it ruins my day (how others feel or act) and it makes me anxious or feel isolated because they I avoid certain people to avoid negativity or feeling that way.
