Many small farms have popped up with the increase in the local food movement. This increase has made the need for sound scientific information more important than ever. The small farmer, with limited resources, probably uses the internet to solve their farming problems. If the info is based with science that relates to California, it’s probably fine but what’s the guarantee that it will be? California climates are so different within our own state, let alone the nation requiring knowledge of not only the crop but the local environment. Misinformation to a small farmer could prove troublesome for our larger operations if a disease or pest is not treated properly and quickly. The Butte County Farm Bureau supports the addition of a Small Farms/Local Food Systems Advisor for Butte and the surrounding Counties.

While farming is farming - certainly there are great benefits and challenges to a "small" or micro operation. Growers have the same access to information regardless of size. What smaller growers don't have is someone that is applying that information or knowledge on a small scale exclusively. Perhaps we in agriculture are missing out on surfacing better techniques for increasing the viability of local food system because there isn't anyone with that focus.

Ad dean of the College of Agriculture as CSU, Chico we are seeing more and more students interested in agrciulture, which is great! Many of these students express interest in learning more about food systems and connecting farmers to their customers AKA the local community. The College of Agriculture has an interest in having more interaction with the UC Extension Service for research and teaching programs focused on local food systems and fully supports having this position filled.

In the Butte, Glenn and Tehama county, we have seen a marked increase in the number and diversity of small farms selling their commodities at local stores, fruit stands, schools and farmers markets. We now have a number of community support agriculture sites (CSAs). Butte County has adopted an "uniques ag-overlay" in its general plan to support the continuation and development of small farms. A small farms and food systems farm advisor position is needed to provided support, reseaarch
and outreach to develop and maintain the vialbility of these up-coming food systems.

As indicated by the comments, this position proposal has excellent local support from our Agricultural Commissioner, Richard Price; our Butte County Farm Bureau President, Stacy Gore; the Ag Dean at CSUC,Jennifer Ryder Fox; and the Executive Director of the Butte County Farm Bureau, Colleen Aguiar. Small farmers in the northern valley involved in local food production and marketing could benefit greatly from UCCE research and extension support.
