258 CE Specialist in Vegetable Crop Pathology

Associated Documents

This proposal has been formally submitted for the 2012 cycle.

This is a critical position in the UC system and to California agriculture. With the retirement of several extension specialists, huge gaps in research and extension efforts have been created. Any other state in the US with the acreage and value of Calif. vegetable and small fruit crops would have 3-4 specialists servicing these industries. California has none! With strong commodity boards and many current problems (food safety, citrus HLB, MeBr phase out in strawberries) a strong research program with ample funding is likely.

As a member of the Crop Protection industry who works extensively in California, I can say without doubt that there is a great need for an extension specialist working in vegetables and small fruits. Currently, private industry is beginning to fill the void, but they lack the expertise and the credibility that comes with the University.

This is a critical position for a valuable industry in California. Because of the vast size of the state and the diversity in crops and climate, there is a strong need for specialists in specific regions. The UCR pathology department has strong tradition as a worldwide authority in plant pathology and high level of expertise, because of this it is a very good reason to base this position.

This position is in an area of critical need that clearly fills a gap in UC ANR expertise. The linkage with food safety is a strong component. I regard it as high priority for filling.
