Certified Farmers' Markets

In California, a certified farmers' market (CFM) is a market where the farmers are only selling what they grow themselves. Farmers must have certified producer certificates from their county ag departments in order to sell at a CFM. These markets are vital marketing pathways for many farmers, and an important place for customers to build relationships with the people growing their food.

Nutrition assistance and incentives at certified farmers' markets

Many farmers' markets accept forms of nutrition assistance and incentives, including:

• CalFresh: Customers can spend their EBT benefits at many farmers' markets in the Sacramento region. You can check if a market accepts CalFresh using The Ecology Center's Market Finder tool or Alchemist CDC's map. 
• Market Match: The Market Match program gives CalFresh customers extra dollars to spend on fruits and vegetables. The Ecology Center's Market Finder tool or Alchemist CDC's map may indicate if a market has a matching program.
• WIC Farmers' Market Nutrition Program: This program offers  families participating in WIC extra dollars to spend at authorized farmers' markets between May 1 and Nov. 30 each year. Learn more about the program here or check out lists of authorized farmers and authorized farmers' markets.
