Live Scan Process for New Volunteers

Fingerprint Clearance from the Department of Justice (DOJ)

All UCCE Volunteers (Master Gardener trainees, Master Food Preserver trainees, and 4-H Volunteers) need to be fingerprinted and pass a DOJ/FBI background check. Each entity requesting your fingerprints has their own reporting number; this is why you must complete this process even if you have been cleared by another organization in the past.

If you have lived anywhere other than California within the past ten (10) years your must also mark the FBI box in addition to the DOJ box for the level of service.

Volunteer applicants should complete Live Scan 3-4 weeks prior to program start/end dates.

Where to Get Fingerprinted

Use the information above or you can go to your local police departments, sheriff’s office or public applicant Live Scan sites. You can find a site near you by going to https://oag.ca.gov/fingerprints/locations. You do not need to go to a site in your home county if another site is more convenient.

What to Bring to Live Scan Appointment

  • Photo ID
  • Form of payment
    • Volunteers will need to pay the agency’s rolling fee at the time of service (ANR does NOT have a “billing number” for fingerprinting). Rolling fees are typically less than $30, if it’s more than that, check for another location, (the exception to this is the San Francisco area, fees are minimum $30). The DOJ does not assess a fee for volunteers however; the FBI fee is $15.
  • Pre-filled "Request for Live Scan Services" form provided to you by your county UCCE Office. You will complete the middle section of the form with your personal information. To request a form please email cecentralsierra@ucanr.edu or call:
    • Amador: 209-223-6482
    • Calaveras: 209-754-6477
    • El Dorado: 530-621-5502
    • Tuolumne: 209-533-5695

Live Scan Processing

The Live Scan operator will fill out the bottom section of your form and provide you with a copy. It is important for volunteers to (personally) keep a copy of their completed Live Scan form. County offices nor ANR Risk Services, are responsible for maintaining a copy of this confidential record.

Most Live Scan responses are completed within two weeks after completing fingerprinting. In order to track the status of your Live Scan you must submit your ATI# using the following link: https://forms.gle/D7Mf3LZh6NaDwXkZA
