Kingdom Animalia, Phylum Arthropoda, Class Insecta, Order Hymenoptera, Family Halictidae 

How to identify it:

Exact species can be hard, but bees in this genus are easily distinguishable by their metalic green color. They are a medium sized see, about half the size of a honey bee. The females are all green while the males' abdomen are striped yellow and black. They nest in the ground, sometimes in communal nests. 

Gardener friend or foe?

Friend!

Like other bees, these are helpful pollinators. The males can be particularly abundant in late summer around flowers.
