Community Gardens of the Eastern Sierra
Community gardens are found throughout the Eastern Sierra, from the high mountains to the high and low deserts. Established in 1998, the Lee Vining Community Garden was the first in the region, followed in 2009 by gardens in Lone Pine and Bishop. Since then, additional gardens have cropped up in Independence, Darwin, Bridgeport, Crowley Lake, Benton, and Big Pine. Gardens have been started on school and church properties, in city parks, and in backyards. Chances are that there is a community garden near you, so if you'd like to get your hands dirty, dig in!
