Plum Pox Virus in New York State – Sharing what we learned

Margaret K. Kelly
Assistant Director, Division of Plant Industry, NYS Department of Agriculture & Markets, Albany, NY

Plum Pox Virus was first found in New York in 2006. This was after several years of survey. Survey includes collecting 8 leaf sample. New York never had symptoms. Taken over one million samples in 15 years, no symptoms, found 50 positive trees. New York is close to eradication of the disease. Disease remains unchecked across the Niagara River in Ontario, Canada. Positive trees in Canada pose a risk of reinfection. Grower support critical to successful program. Survey needs to be efficient and minimize disruption of growers and homeowners.
