Each of these 3-hour workshops cover a different aspect of beginning pastured/free-range poultry farming and include talks from various experts in the field.
Join us at the UC Davis campus to connect with other beginning farmers and learn from our speakers! Workshops are $10/day with light refreshments provided. Please note that car parking on campus is $10/day.

Monday, January 6th, 2020 @ 4:30-7:30pm:
Husbandry of Pastured Poultry (Dr. Maurice Pitesky):
This talk will focus on the basics of free-range and pastured poultry husbandry with respect to the interface between the coop and pasture, nutrition, predator control and space requirements. Dr. Maurice Pitesky is a veterinarian, faculty member at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, and UC Cooperative Extension specialist.
Pasture Management (Tim Mueller):
This talk will focus on the management of forage for pastured poultry. Tim Mueller of Riverdog Farm will speak about what they have learned on their farm in the Capay Valley through several years of planting and managing pasture for raising poultry, seeking both better poultry production and land use practices.

This round-table discussion will feature farmer speakers who will shed some light on what the economics of pastured poultry farming as well as some marketing techniques worked well (or not!) for their businesses.

Alternative Species Overview (Marc Metzer):
This talk will focus on the basics of waterfowl commercial poultry production with a focus on small farms. Marc Metzer is the general manager of Metzer Farms in Gonzales, California.
Duck Welfare Considerations (Dr. Maja Makagon):
This talk will address the relationship between ducks welfare assessment, management and health. Dr. Makagon is a faculty member in the Animal Science department at UC Davis who focuses on behavior, welfare and management of poultry. Her research investigates the ways in which poultry (mainly ducks, broilers and laying hens) interact with their managed environments and the implications that these interactions have on the birds' productivity and well-being.

Poultry Nutrition Basics (Dr. James Hermes):
This talk will discuss poultry nutrition with a focus on some of the challenges of pastured and free-range poultry. Dr. James Hermes is a faculty member at Oregon State University who focuses on poultry production and nutrition.
