Abstract: Building a Weather and Water Ready Nation: A 10-year Perspective Looking Back at the Accomplishments and Forward to the Opportunities That Lie Ahead

This year, the National Weather Service celebrates 10 years of Building a Weather Ready Nation with core partners throughout the emergency management, public safety and water resource management communities. The review points to the amazing advancements that have been made across the enterprise and how the partnerships have allowed the NWS to realize the intrinsic value of the agency’s observations, forecasts and warning services while also attaining the mission of saving lives and mitigating property loss. The successes and lessons learned during the Weather Ready Nation effort over the past 10 years will be discussed, along with how the NOAA/NWS continues to move forward in its efforts to prepare this nation for extreme weather and water 

Biography

Dr. Louis W. Uccellini is Director of the National Weather Service, where he leads the mission of the agency – to provide weather, water, and climate data, forecasts, and warnings to protect life and property and enhance the national economy. He champions close partnerships with emergency managers and understands how the public benefits from coordinated and consistent messages as it prepares for extreme weather and water events. He is passionate about creating a Weather-Ready Nation and encourages the workforce to build relationships with both intragovernmental and external partners, and to provide timely and consistent decision support services. Dr. Uccellini leads a workforce of over 4,000 employees who serve the public throughout the United States.
