Top Plants For Sonoma County
Red Hot Poker, Torch Lily
Attractive to hummingbirds; groom in spring to maintain appearance.
Wandlike, succulent stems topped with long-lasting tight clusters of drooping tubular flowers are bicolored in red, orange, coral, yellow, or cream on most species and cultivars. The common name comes from darker red or orange tints on the topmost blooms. Grassy clumps of long, arching foliage slowly spread but require removal of dead foliage in fall that is renewed during winter rains when they require good drainage to survive. Flowering is minimal at best with no summer moisture.
