Top Plants For Sonoma County
Huge variation in size and form. Needle-type leaved species are deer-proof.
The fine-textured foliage of many species resembles conifer needles. Flowers are curved and tubular or spidery, often in clusters, in shades of pink, red, orange, or cream. Many species do not adapt readily to California gardens and are sensitive to fertilizers, especially to high levels of phosphorus, but others are dependable landscape features. ‘Canberra,’ ‘Noelii,’ and G. rosmarinifolia have reputations as long-lived large shrubs; the latter also has dwarf forms.
